Currency Uzbekistan

The currency of Uzbekistan is the Uzbek Sum, with one Sum equalling 100 Tiyn. Notes come in denominations of Sum1000, 500, 200, 100, 50, 25, 10, 5, 3 and 1, with coins coming in denominations of 50, 20, 10, 5, 3 and 1 Tiyn. It should be noted that Uzbekistan is essentially a cash-only economy for persons not holding special status in the country.

Currency can be exchanged at bureau de changes in hotels and at banks, and should not be exchanged anywhere else as penalties for using the black market can be harsh. Traveller’s cheques are rarely accepted.

ATMs are rare. Credit and debit cards are accepted in larger hotels, but not many other places.
