Uzbekistan has a comprehensive road network and conditions are generally decent, though surfaces tend to get worse in more rural regions. Local drivers can be aggressive and night time driving does not come highly recommended. Bus and coach services cover the majority of the country, and long distance trips are cheap and fairly comfortable, if not slow. Local buses tend to be less comfortable and more crowded, though still very cheap. Taxi services cover the whole country and whilst more expensive than buses, they tend to be faster and more reliable – just make sure a fare is agreed upon before commencing a journey. Tashkent is also home to trolleybus, tram and underground services, all of which offer cheap, mostly reliable and unspectacular ways of getting around. Train travel is very cheap at the lowest class, though muggings on the cheap carriages do occur. Higher cost carriages offer more comfort and cleaner windows, meaning the views can be enjoyed. Trains tend to be fairly slow and can be prone to breaking down. Internal flights are available between most of Uzbekistan’s major towns, but the cost and questionable state of the aircraft used leads most to opt for buses or trains.
