Border regions in Uzbekistan are potential flashpoints with some being mined – regions around Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan should be avoided. Uzbekistan has found itself on the receiving end of a number of violent terrorist attacks, and the country is rated as having a ‘high’ threat of future attacks – bombings have killed civilians in the past, so great attention should be paid to embassy situation reports. It is generally advised that the East of Uzbekistan is avoided due to civil unrest. Water used for drinking, making ice cubes or brushing teeth should first be sterilised in some manner. Fruit should be peeled before consumption and vegetables should be cooked. Meat should only be eaten well-cooked and hot. Dairy products are considered safe for consumption. Immunisation against typhoid, hepatitis A and meningococcal meningitis is usually recommended.
